I just purchased a Magellan 4250 and found that the maps are current as of
first quarter 2007.

Of course they have updated versions for 79.99. What's the deal here??

In exactly the same situation I sprung for the update.

In a word: Don't.

If you just purchased it, and it's new, within 30 days you should be able to
get a free map update. Check their website. Refurbished and used units
aren't eligible.

I bought a 4210 under similar circumstances... It was on sale and had
been greatly discounted. The maps were a year old. I guess they
figured by taking $80 off the price of the hardware, they'd get it back
when the owner paid for a map upgrade.

I didn't pay for the latest maps. FWIW, I'll only upgrade for maps that
are over 3 years old.
