Post by BroadbackPost by ps56kPost by ps56kHappen to find out about this topo type mapping software,
and thought I would post a link to the website.

and here's the video overview -

Not sure how this product compares
to existing topo type mapping software for GPS units.

"the original poster" -->>. As I use Memory Map all the time with my
Garmin 60CSX I thought there would be a lot of knowledge of the product
here. It is a mapping program, where maps are downloaded onto a
computer. Then one can plan walks then download onto the GPS. After
walking then the track can be uploaded into Memory Map and information
gathered. For example total height climbed, also you can compare your
actual track with your planned route. Hope that helps!
Thank you all for your interest.
It would appear that the main focus of this software
is the application loaded on the PC along with the application
loaded on a Smartphone with Windows Mobile.
Wonder how the logistics (and cost) actually compare
with say Garmin Mapsource and their topo maps ?
Maybe the Memory Map product on the PC
has more "connected" features vs Mapsource ?
But - when you only have the GPS in your hand,
how many features are really there compared to ANY map image ?
I can only write as a Brit. Memory Map uses Ordinance survey maps, which
can be of high detail, this means they are excellent (in my opinion)for
planning walks as all footpaths are mapped, also good I imagine for
bicycles. There is also an option for a 3D effect which gives you a fair
idea of the terrain if you are not adept at reading contours.

This thread seems to be an appeal for information, so here is my
contribution.
I have Memory Map 1:50K mapping of Great Britain on my PC, which allows me
to produce A4-sized Ordnance Survey Landranger image printouts of any chosen
area. This is much easier than having a complete set of paper maps of GB.
The current version includes satellite imagery as well as maps. MM maps are
raster maps, so only useful at or near their original scale. They have much
more detail than the Garmin OSGB vector mapping. MM now enable users to buy
maps of a chosen area for download at various scales.
I can plan walks or cycle routes on the PC and transfer the marks
(waypoints) and routes to my handheld Garmin GPSr. Walking World have a
large library of walks in MM format over much of GB. A few sample walks are
free, but the rest are available to subscribers or for one-off purchase.
After the trip I usually transfer the tracks to Memory Map (or to
MapSource). What Memory Map cannot do is transfer the map itself to my GPSr.
I hope this helps a bit! Mark I
